There are only three birthdays celebrated in the Church’s calendar: the birth of Jesus (Christmas), the birth of Mary (Sept. 8) and the birth of John the Baptist (June 24). John is honored in this way since he had the God-given role of announcing that the Messiah had come.

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS — Many Catholics throughout the world hit the streets to display their faith in Eucharistic processions on June 19, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.

Two retired priests of the Archdiocese of Mobile passed away in June. Fr. James Carlsen, who was most recently in residence in Gulfport, Miss., died June 2 at the age of 68. Fr. Robert Kieltyka, who was in residence in Louisiana, died June 4 at the age of 88.

Fr. Marcin Dudziak has been reinstated to active ministry in the Archdiocese of Mobile.

MOBILE—The French boys choir, Les Moineaux, from Paris will perform a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday July 24 at St. Pius X Parish in Mobile. Les Moineaux has been singing in France and all over the world for nearly 70 years.

MOBILE— In conjunction with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' call for a Eucharistic Revival, St. Dominic Parish in Mobile will host a Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit from July 8-10.  

Margaret Atwood once wrote that sometimes a thing needs to be said, and said, said again, until it doesn’t need to be said anymore. That’s why I write a column annually on suicide, mostly saying the same things over and over again. The hope is that, like a note put into a bottle and floated out to sea, my little message might find someone needing consolation after losing a loved one to suicide. 

Each one of us represents a different color in God’s perfect painting. It takes each one of us using our gifts and talents to fulfill God’s plan for our lives. I am not an artist, so think of a giant color-by-numbers painting. The picture is not complete unless all the colors are filled in, making each one of us equally important.  

I am finishing a pilgrimage. I have been blessed to encounter the remains of many saints, and in doing so encountering their lives. I think there is a danger here. It is so easy to dehumanize the saints. We are enamored with stories of heroic deaths, or of miracles worked. Pilgrims flock to the saints with great stories, and I am no different.

Escribo esto desde Asís, Italia. No estoy seguro de que haya un lugar que destile más santidad y paz que Asís. Estoy en una peregrinación, así que pensé en reflexionar sobre la idea de peregrinación.
