A documentary highlighting the remarkable life of Bishop Michael Portier, the first bishop of Mobile, will be available to everyone beginning Monday, April 26.
There are many moments in movies, books or television shows where the hero discovers who they are and who they are destined to become. Oftentimes it takes challenges or obstacles for that revelation to occur. It could be that a family member reveals an insight, or the life lessons learned along the way illustrate one’s strengths and gifts.
The Archdiocese of Mobile is proud to present an excellently produced video on the life of our first bishop. Although the cathedral parish was established in 1703 and is the oldest congregation of any faith or denomination in Alabama, it was not until 1825 that a bishop was appointed for Mobile.
The tomb is empty! Alleluia! Our faith in Jesus is dependent on the bodily resurrection of Jesus. We may say something like, “It is incredible that Jesus rose from the dead!” We mean to say, that it is fantastic and wonderful, but there are many people in this world who will take the more literal meaning; it is not believable. I would like to spend some time reflecting on the credibility of Jesus’ resurrection. Please know that I am going to do so in a very brief manner.
If there is one thing I have learned this past year through these challenging circumstances, it is that God intended for us to be together in communion with one another. The things I have missed most are big family gatherings and large events at my parish with my parish family. Fellowship allows us the opportunity to be a good steward in ways we may not have imagined.
Each year, the priests in the Archdiocese of Mobile gather with the archbishop in the cathedral for the Chrism Mass when the oils used in worship are blessed and consecrated. Here is Archbishop Rodi’s sermon from this year’s Chrism Mass celebrated on March 29.
