“The Catholic Week,” the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Mobile, earned three national awards June 9 at the Catholic Media Conference’s annual convention in Baltimore. The awards were presented by the Catholic Media Association of the United States and Canada for work produced in 2022.
TCW Editor Rob Herbst received second place in the “Best Headline” category for the headline “Vesting interest – The history, meaning of priests’ vestments.” The headline, article and photo illustration appeared in the Aug. 12, 2022, edition of “The Catholic Week.”
Judges remarked: “It was the uncommon language used in the play on words that made this piece stand out. The meaning in the second half of the headline allowed for clarity in addition.”
Herbst also received recognition for photograph. He received third place in the “Best Multiple Picture Package -News” category. The photo package focused on permanent diaconate ordinations in the archdiocese and appeared in the June 17, 2022, edition of the newspaper.
Judges said: “A wonderful collection of crisp, clean photos that reveal a wide range of emotions. The photo of the candidates prostrating themselves is especially compelling.”
Herbst’s photo titled “Repent and Believe in the Gospel” earned honorable mention in the “Best Photograph – Holy Days/Liturgical Seasons" category. The photo was taken on Ash Wednesday and appeared in the March 11, 2022, edition of the newspaper.
“The tremendous support we have from Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Mobile and our readers is not taken lightly,” Herbst said. “We are blessed by that support. My fellow staff members at ‘The Catholic Week,’ Pam Wheeler and Ann Marie Osborne, are also blessings and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and willingness to take on all ventures, from production of ‘The Catholic Week’ to all online efforts.”
