By The Catholic Week ELIZABETH, N.J. — Teachers Deborah Brown of St. Patrick Catholic School in Robertsdale and Jeanette Connally of St. Dominic Catholic School in Mobile were two of 22 teachers from 10 states selected as Alfred Lerner Fellows by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous.
The teachers delved into the complex history of the Holocaust as well as discussed new teaching techniques for introducing the subject of the Holocaust into their classrooms during the JFR’s Summer Institute for Teachers June 25-June 29 in New Jersey.
Teachers selected for the program must be English, literature social studies teachers at the middle or high school level, have taught at least five years, are at least five years from retirement and currently teach the Holocaust in their classroom.
Participants were exposed to noted Holocaust scholars. It is designed to allow participants to meet in small groups following each lecture, address the specific aspect of the Holocaust that is presented, share teaching concepts and develop approaches to introducing the subject matter to their students.
