Spring is here, thank God we live in Alabama! Spring brings many familiar events or recollections of past celebrations. I would like to talk about one event dear to my heart, the Rite of Election. While it is true that Baptism can be celebrated on most days of the year, Easter is the most preferred day to celebrate new life and the coming to new life through the Sacraments of the Church. In many dioceses there is one ceremony at their Cathedral for all who are coming into the Church. Our archdiocese is too geographically large to ask all who are coming into the Church to drive to Mobile for a ceremony. The Archdiocese of Mobile offers the same ceremony three times at different locations throughout the archdiocese. I find the ceremonies to be moving and joyful and routinely I see people moved to tears at different times during the liturgy. Finding freedom in Christ is so liberating! One common thread of the ceremony is the realization that almost all of those becoming Catholic have something in common—most were invited by someone to look into the beauty of the Catholic Church. I implore you to do the same. Please, share your faith with family and friends. Tell them of the joy you feel because of your love for Christ and your knowledge that He loves you. In fact, He doesn’t just love you—He loves you enough to die in your place. Remarkable! Please don’t be afraid to share your faith. If you found a very compassionate and capable doctor, would you hesitate to tell others about him or her? If you found a restaurant that you thought was fantastic, would you tell your friends? Then please do not hesitate to share the good news that you have received! — Pat Arensberg is the Director of the Office for Evangelization and Family Life. Email him at [email protected].
