By Suzanne Laurier For The Catholic Week ORANGE BEACH — St. Thomas by the Sea in Orange Beach presented the Vatican International Exhibition of the Eucharistic Miracles of the World from Nov. 12-14.
More than 100 posters describing these miracles, which have happened in Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Mexico, Argentina and in many other countries, were made available to our parishioners and visitors. The oldest miracle described happened in the 300s, and the most recent in 2013.
Each miracle presented is venerated at a shrine. These miracles are a gift from God, and help deepen knowledge and love of His greatest gift, the gift of the Body and Blood of His only-begotten son, Jesus.
Many who attended the Exhibition expressed amazement at how knowledge of these miracle stories inspires more ardent love of this central tenet of the faith.
A debt of gratitude is owed to Blessed Carlo Acutis, who first had the idea of producing the exhibition. To paraphrase the opening poster of the Exhibition: After receiving his first communion at the age of seven, Carlo did not miss daily attendance at Mass. He would always try to practice Eucharistic Devotion, convinced that Christ is present in the Eucharist in the same way he was 2000 years ago. He would say: “Back then people had to travel to see him, while we are much luckier today because we can find him in any church around the world: Jerusalem is right on our doorstep.”
Carlo would constantly try to find new ways to help others to strengthen their own faith. In 2002, he decided to stage an exhibition of the Miracles of the Eucharist recognized by the Church. Blessed Carlo died at the age of 15. This exhibition, which was graciously provided to the parish by Archangel Radio, is his legacy.
