By The Catholic Week Fr. Charles Joseph McCabe, who served throughout the Archdiocese of Mobile, died Sept. 19 in Birmingham at the age of 74. Fr. McCabe was ordained at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile on May 30, 1992. He served throughout the Archdiocese of Mobile, including at St. Margaret Parish in Bayou La Batre, St. Elizabeth Parish in Greenville, St. Pius X, St. Dominic at St. Ignatius parishes in Mobile, St. John the Evangelist Parish in Ozark and Holy Spirit Parish in Montgomery. He also served as chaplain to Dominican Monastery in Marbury and in prison ministry in the Montgomery area where he offered Holy Mass and heard confessions. Fr. McCabe was a priest volunteer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Women’s Facility in Aliceville, When he visited he would hear confessions and say Mass at two facilities on the Aliceville campus. He was in residence at St. Peter Parish in Montgomery; and later retired on July 1, 2012. Fr. McCabe was born April 22, 1949, in Mobile. He came from a very long line of Mobile Catholic families. His mother, Rosemary Walsh McCabe married James Walsh at St. Joan of Arc Parish. His grandmother was Edna Wolfe and married at St. Mary Catholic Church. He was very active with the Knights of Columbus before and after his priesthood. He was also active with the Legion of Mary in Mobile along with other parishes. He studied with the Jesuits for more than 10 years. He pronounced his first vows in the Society of Jesus at Grand Coteau, La., in the chapel of St. Charles College on Aug. 15, 1982. The family received friends at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street Thursday, Sept. 21. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, Sept. 22 at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile, with interment at Catholic Cemetery.
