By The Catholic Week Brother Alan Drain, S.C., a religious Brother of the Sacred Heart, died Oct. 5, 2021, at age 84 in Baton Rouge, La. Brother Alan was born in Mobile, received a degree from Spring Hill College and taught at McGill-Institute.
Brother Alan entered the juniorate at Saint Joseph’s in Metuchen, N.J., in 1956. He professed his first vows in 1957 and his final vows in Mobile, AL, in 1963.
A history buff at heart and an avid reader, Brother Alan was probably best known in community for his love of history, his voracious appetite for learning, and his love for teaching, all of which served him well in his 64 years of religious profession and educational ministry as a Brother.
Brother Alan spent most of his professional life as a teacher of English and history. His educational career brought him to many of the Brothers’ schools in the south, including McGill Institute and St. Aloysius (Vicksburg, Miss.), Cor Jesu H.S. (New Orleans), St. Stanislaus (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), Bishop Dunne H.S. (Dallas), and Brother Martin H.S. (New Orleans).
After leaving school ministry in 1997, he began a 15-year history of service to his religious community, as Province archivist, Refugee Coordinator, assistant Mission Appeals Coordinator and volunteer librarian in several communities.
Brother Alan is survived by three brothers, John (Bette) Drain of Mobile, Patrick (Joann) Drain of St. Paul, Minn., and Timothy Drain of Montrose, Ala.; and two sisters, Sharon Drain and Wendy Drain (Ralph) Elmore, both of Loxley, Ala.
Mass of Christian burial was Oct. 16 at the Branton chapel at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. Interment followed in the Brothers’ cemetery behind St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
