25 Years
Pope John Paul II marked 20 years as the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. Sister Lucille Smoker, MSBT, died at the Mother House in Philadelphia on Aug. 16, 1998. Her first mission was to Catholic Social Services in Montgomery for Pro-Life and Pastoral Care Ministry. Members of the McGill-Toolen Homecoming Court were: Queen Darcy Nolan, and Seniors Tierney Christian, Teresa White and Ashley Payne; Juniors Julie Tutwiller, Tiffany Lindell and Alicia Boykin; Sophomores Christie Quindlen and Annie Christian; and Freshmen Katherine Smart and Heather Perry. Arthur and Joyce Trowbridge of the Archdiocese of Mobile were given a promotion to Knight and Lady of the Grand Cross at a meeting of the southeastern lieutenancy in Savannah, Ga., in recognition of their services to the Order. The theme of the annual archdiocesan observance of the solemnity of Christ the King was “Come Holy Spirit of Hope and Unity” and its focus was on the second of the three-year period of preparation for the new millennium. The observance began with a youth rally at the Saenger Theater followed by a concert in Cathedral Square featuring nationally-known Christian recording artist, Israel. Fifty-eight women representing 13 congregations met at the Sacred Heart residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor in order to reflect on the words of Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter called “Vita Consecrada” — on the consecrated life. Corpus Christi Parish in West Mobile celebrated 40 years. Catholic High School Montgomery defeated Clayton 31-16 for a happy homecoming game. — Anne Baggett compiles information for Looking Back from past issues of this newspaper.
