Reverend A. William Crandall, S.J., former provincial of all Southern Province Jesuits and President of Spring Hill College, gave the closed retreat for women at the Visitation Retreat House.
Montgomery Deanery NCCW sponsored its annual Evening of Games at the St. Bede auditorium.
Newly elected officers of the Foley-Elberta Council No. 2736, Knights of Columbus were: Robert Huffman, grand knight; Arthur Weeks, deputy grand knight; Charles Raussher, chancellor; Harold Schneider, recorder; Al Schneider, treasurer; John Weiss, financial secretary; Joe Yankovitz, advocate; Andy Baros, warden; Clarence Eslava, inside guard; and Elliot Weeks, outside guard.

Father A. William Crandall, president of Spring Hill College 1959-1965, died at a local hospital after giving a retreat at Visitation Monastery.
George A. Reskey was ordained at the City of St. Jude by Bishop John L. May.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new state of the art facilities on the McGill-Toolen High School campus. Named by one of the donors, the Banks-Harris Track and Field was to be completed in August 1998.
St. Jude High School Class of 1998 valedictorian was Alexis Lester and Salutatorian was Melissa Johnson. Thirty-five students received diplomas.
John Geary, Montgomery Catholic High School’s 1998 Valedictorian and the school’s “Leader of the Year” and Laurie Yancey, salutatorian was also named the “Ideal Catholic High Graduate.”
Co-validictorians of McGill-Toolen’s Cass of 1998 were Andrew Mullek and Sara Mareno. Ninety members of the graduating class received scholarships.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for expansion of Christ the King Catholic Church in Andalusia.
Spring Hill College named John W. Barter chair of the College’s Board of Trustees. Barter received his bachelor degree from the college in 1968. John Burke was named new board member and was a 1993 Spring Hill graduate.
1948 graduates of Bishop Toolen High School attended the 50th anniversary reunion of their class at St. Pius X Church and Sarto Center.
Spring Hill College President Gregory F. Lucey, S.J., announced the appointment of Terry Fowler as the new women’s basketball coach.
Grant Shell, goalkeeper for the McGill-Toolen boys soccer team was selected First Team All-State by the Birmingham News and Player of the Year by the Optimist Club of Mobile.
Catholic High graduate of the Class of 1998, Collin Durel, was named to the All State/All Conference team.
