Most Rev. Joseph Lawson Howze, auxiliary bishop of Natchez-Jackson, was welcomed to Mobile at a homecoming Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral.
The Alexander O’Neill Council 6421 Knights of Columbus was formed in Bayou La Batre. Clarence Barron served as Grand Knight.
A total of 18 students were enrolled in the 11th class of St. Jude School of Nursing. Sister Mary James, R.N., served as director.
Receiving athletic scholarships to Morehouse College, Atlanta, were St. Jude students Elliot Gilmore, Michael Butcher and Jefferson Underwood.

The message of Archbishop John P. Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications at the Vatican, to Catholic newspapers, magazines and books for Catholic Press Month was “News with a value not only for today or tomorrow - but forever."
Msgr. James Francis Madigan, a native of Ireland, died Jan. 28 at the Sacred Heart Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Mobile at age 92. He served the Archdiocese from 1921 until 1993. His service included St. Joan of Arc for 31 years. It was his first assignment after being ordained.
Mrs. Patrick J. Cooney was installed as president of St. Mary’s Home Auxiliary for the 1998-2000 term.
St. Ignatius Parish, Mobile, commissioned 29 Stephen Ministers. They were the first Catholic Stephen Ministers in the State of Alabama who had completed 50 hours of specialized training and prayer to serve in the parish outreach as volunteers dedicated to provide one-on-one care in the name of the parish to people in need.
For the first time in the 67 year history of the Catholic Charities Appeal in the Archdiocese of Mobile pledges exceeded the $3 million mark with a total of $3,119,628 pledged. Fr. Paul G. Zoghby served as director of the Appeal.
The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women presented Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb a check for $92,000 for the priest burse fund. Presenting the check were co-chairwomen Marie Martin and Lucille Kilcullen.
Close to 800 concert-goers enjoyed the special mix of music, witness and prayer presented by artist John Michael Talbot, Tony Melandez and Tom Booth. Proceeds of the concert were part of the Table of the Lord Tour used to help continue the work of Mother Teresa and other missions.
New members inducted into the Spring Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame were Richard Airey, Tony Bivens, Joseph Nolfe, Francis “Bucky” Poole and Jay York. Jim Rebarchak served as chairman. Also honored was John Carwie for his long-time support of the college’s athletic programs.
Winner of the 35th annual Spelling Bee for Mobile/Baldwin Catholic Schools was Kathryn Murrell Greer Martindale.
