El Fin de una Era — The end of an era

l último fin de semana de abril marcará el final de la presencia de los sacerdotes de la Congregación de la Misión (Vicentinos) en Alabama, ya que la última parroquia vicentina será transferida a la Arquidiócesis de Mobile.
Los vicentinos llegaron al este de Alabama a principios del siglo XX, en una época en que el sentimiento anticatólico prevalecía en el sur.
Todo comenzó con correspondencias entre el Obispo Allen y el provincial Vicentino, el padre Patrick McHale,a principios del 1910, acerca de confiar el “territorio de Opelika” a la Congregación de la Misión, y en septiembre de ese mismo año, luego de que se comprara la casa en la esquina de la 4ta avenida y la calle 10 en Opelika, Santa María de la Misión se convirtió en el centro de la actividad misionera en la región, un territorio más grande que el estado de Connecticut.
El 9 de octubre de 1910 se celebró la primera Misa en la capilla de la casa de Opelika.
A lo largo de los últimos 111 años, los sacerdotes Vicentinos han atendido las necesidades espirituales de los feligreses de la parroquia de Santa María de la Misión. Además, el espíritu misionero de los Vicentinos, su amor por los pobres y por aquellos que viven al margen de la sociedad en nuestra Arquidiócesis han tenido un impacto en la vida de muchas personas desfavorecidas e inmigrantes en Opelika y sus alrededores.
La Parroquia Santa María de la Misión ha sido bendecida desde el principio con santos sacerdotes, quienes en el espíritu del fundador de la Congregación de la Misión, San Vicente de Paúl, dedicaron su ministerio al servicio y evangelización de los pobres y marginados de la sociedad.
Santa María de la Misión fue el punto desde donde el Padre Thomas Judge, C.M. estableció el Apostolado del Cenáculo Misionero y fundó órdenes religiosas para mujeres (Siervas Misioneras de la Santísima Trinidad, M.S.B.T.) y hombres (Siervos Misioneros de la Santísima Trinidad, S.T.), mejor conocidos como los Trinitarios.
Santa María de la Misión es una parroquia en crecimiento que ofrece cinco Misas los fines de semana, tres de las cuales son en español.
El Ministerio Hispano de la Arquidiócesis de Mobile está eternamente agradecido a los Vicentinos. Los guardaremos en nuestro corazón y seguiremos orando por santas vocaciones para la Congregación de la Misión.

The last weekend of April will mark the end of the presence of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian) priests in Alabama, as the last Vincentian parish will be transferred to the Archdiocese of Mobile.
The Vincentians arrived in East Central Alabama at the dawn of the twentieth century, during a time when anti-Catholic sentiment was prevalent in the south.
It all began with correspondence between Bishop Allen and the Vincentian provincial, Fr. Patrick McHale about entrusting the “Opelika territory” to the Congregation of the Mission in early 1910. In September of that same year, after the house at the corner of 4th Avenue and 10th Street in Opelika was purchased, Saint Mary of the Mission became the center for the missionary activity in the region, a territory larger than the state of Connecticut.
On October 9, 1910, the first Mass was celebrated at the chapel of the house in Opelika.
Throughout the last 111 years, the Vincentian priests have served the spiritual needs of the parishioners at Saint Mary of the Mission Parish. The missionary spirit of the Vincentians, their love for the poor and for those living at the margin of society in our Archdiocese have made an impact in the lives of many disadvantaged people and immigrants in Opelika and surrounding areas.
Saint Mary of the Mission Parish has been blessed from the beginning with holy priests, who in the spirit of the founder of the Congregation of the Mission, Saint Vincent de Paul, dedicated their ministry to service and evangelization of the poor and those on the fringe of society.
Saint Mary of the Mission was the harbor from which Father Thomas Judge, C.M. established the Missionary Cenacle Apostolate and founded religious orders for women (Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity, M.S.B.T.) and men (Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, S.T.), better known as the Trinitarians.
Saint Mary of the Mission is now a thriving Parish that offers five weekend Masses, three of which are in Spanish.
The Hispanic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Mobile is forever grateful to the Vincentians. We will keep them in our hearts and will keep praying for holy vocations to the Congregation of the Mission.
