By The Catholic Week MONTGOMERY — Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago Joseph Perry will give a presentation on the life of Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at the City of St. Jude Parish in Montgomery. He will also celebrate the Vigil Mass at 5 p.m.
Bishop Perry's presentation on Fr. Tolton is in honor of Black Catholic History Month, which begins Nov. 1.
Bishop Perry is the postulator for the cause of canonization of Fr. Tolton.
Born in Missouri, Fr. Tolton overcame slavery and racism to become the first Black American ordained to the Catholic priesthood in the United States.
Bishop Perry currently serves as vice president of the Board of the Black Catholic Congress, is Chairman of the USCCB Committee on African-American Catholics, and as National Chaplain for the Knights of St. Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary, among many other duties and responsibilities.
