By The Catholic Week The Archdiocese of Mobile’s Department of Multicultural Ministry is highlighting the six African-American Catholics on the road to sainthood. The department is sponsoring a Revival to be hosted at Prince of Peace Parish in Mobile, with the theme “Called to be Saints: Then and Now.” Despite the legacies of many noteworthy Black Catholics, there has yet to be a recognized African-American saint. Led by Fr. Manuel Williams, C.R., pastor of Resurrection Parish in Montgomery, the Revival will highlight those currently on the canonization journey, as well as Daniel Rudd, founder of first Black Catholic newspaper and National Black Catholic Congress. The six African-American candidates for sainthood include Venerable Father Augustus Tolton, Venerable Henriette Delille, Venerable Mother Mary Lange, Venerable Pierre Toussaint, Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman and Sister of God Julia Greeley. It begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, followed by a 3 p.m. Mass. The Revival continues at 6 p.m. Nov. 6-7. The timing of the Revival is appropriate. In 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic History Month.
