Providence Hospital School of Nursing senior Linda Reid Vogtner was selected “Miss AANS” at the convention of the Alabama Association of Nursing Students in Birmingham.
Head coach Woody Weaver of the Catholic High Knights presented a pair of Most Valuable Player Awards in basketball to two brothers who tied for the honor: Steve Schroll and Sid Schroll. The Knights won the Central Conference and finished in third place in the State Regional Tournament.

25 Years Ago At a press conference held by Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb, representatives of local television, radio and newspaper media were informed of the release of the new papal encyclical, “Evangelium Vitae.” The encyclical was addressed to “every person of good will” and released worldwide the same day. It was expected to be a landmark document of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate.
Dr. Thomas L. Doyle, president of Montgomery Catholic High, received a $2,000 check from Jeff Downes, Chairman of the Loretto/Catholic High Alumni Association as part of $3,600 of monies raised by the association for the school.
Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb, assisted by St. Columba pastor Fr. Patrick Gallagher, blessed a section of Sunset Cemetery set aside for Catholic families in Dothan.

McGill-Toolen students Jennifer McRae was first runner-up and Erin McCarthy was second runner-up in the 1996 Mobile County Junior Miss competition.
