Easter, the glorious celebration of Christ's resurrection, is a time of profound joy and renewal. Beyond the church filled with blooming lilies, family gatherings, Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies, Easter calls us to reflect on the meaning of stewardship in light of Christ's ultimate sacrifice and victory over death. Catholic stewardship, at its core, is the grateful response of a disciple to God's abundant gifts. Stewardship is the responsible use of our time, talents and treasure to serve God and neighbor. "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Peter 4:10). During the Easter season, the understanding of stewardship takes on a special meaning. We are reminded that everything we have is a gift from God, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This immense gift should compel us to examine how we utilize the blessings in our lives. Stewardship of Time: Easter invites us to dedicate time to deepen our relationship with the Risen Lord. We can achieve this with more intentional prayer, attending Mass with greater devotion and committing to spiritual reading. It is a time to reflect on the new life Christ offers and how we can live more fully in His light. Stewardship of Talent: Our unique gifts and abilities are also meant to be shared, especially during this season of new beginnings. Consider how your talents can contribute to your parish community or serve those in need. Maybe we could volunteer at a ministry, offer a particular skill or extend a helping hand to someone. Stewardship of Treasure: Easter's spirit of generosity also extends to our financial resources. Just as Christ gave all for us, we are called to share our treasure with gratitude and love. This involves supporting our parish, contributing to our favorite charity or finding ways to assist the less fortunate in our communities. “The earth is the Lord’s and all it holds, the world and those who dwell in it” (Psalm 24:1). The Easter season is a powerful reminder that we are not owners but stewards of God's creation. As we celebrate Christ's resurrection, let us embody a spirit of gratitude and generosity—utilizing our time, talents and treasure—to reflect the love and hope that Easter represents. By living as faithful stewards, we actively participate in the ongoing work of Christ, bringing His light and love to a world in need. — Shannon Roh is the Executive Director of the Office of Development and Stewardship for the Archdiocese of Mobile.
