Sr. Cecilia Donnellon, RSM dies in Ireland Sr. Cecilia Donnellon, RSM, one of five Sisters of Mercy who came to Holy Family Parish, Mobile, in August 1960, died peacefully in Ireland on Jan. 22, 2021.
According to Holy Family Parish, Sr. Cecilia served at Holy Family until 1964, when she returned to Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. She became the Matron of the county nursing home, petitioning the government for a new building which she supervised until her retirement in the 1990s.
The parish added that Sr. Cecilia loved to travel, and for her 80th birthday she returned to Mobile in 2008 on her way to visit the Grand Canyon. She retired to the motherhouse of her order in Ireland and served in ministry there until her death.
Funeral Mass was Jan. 26 in St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church, Dundalk. Burial followed in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dundalk.
She was preceded in death by her parents Patrick and Ann, brothers Vincent, James, Patrick, John and Gerard. Survivors include her sister-in-law Peg Donlon, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and Sisters of Mercy in Dundalk and Northern Province.
Mass to include Appeal prayer intentions Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi will celebrate a private Mass on Feb. 15, with prayer intentions received through the Archdiocese of Mobile Catholic Charities Appeal. This will be the first of a monthly Mass that will include prayer intentions received through the Appeal.
The annual Catholic Charities Appeal funds more than 30 ministries that help thousands of people in need throughout the southern half of Alabama, which encompasses the Archdiocese of Mobile. Pledges to Catholic Charities are needed and your prayer intentions are welcomed.
Festival of Flowers heads to Cathedral Square The Providence Hospital Foundation's annual Festival of Flowers will take place at Cathedral Square in Mobile this year, from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday March 12-13.
"All Creatures Great and Small" will include life-size living sculptures created by the Mobile area’s best teams of florists, nurseries, landscapers, designers and artists. Anchored by a Bellingrath Gardens and Home display that is sure to wow, these elaborate plant creations will be viewed from a socially distanced space and voted on with a QR code or link. The weekend will also include outdoor seminars, vendors and other attractions.
